Building Healthy Relationships

The Building Healthy Relationships Group (BHR) was started at University City in 2010.  An integral part of UCCC’s Recovery Ministry, BHR is a discussion-based self-exploration group for people who are recovering from the wounds of growing up in a dysfunctional family.  BHG can also be helpful to individuals wanting to improve the quality of their current personal relationships.

As a discussion guide, the group uses a 12-week curriculum and workbook titled "Making Peace with your Past," by Tim Sledge.  The curriculum covers diverse relational topics such as learning to recognize, cope with, and express your emotions; setting boundaries; giving appropriate help to others; healthy communication and conflict resolution techniques; recognizing compulsive behaviors; forgiveness; and healing painful memories.

The BHR group is an open group, and anyone is welcome to join at any time, but a weekly commitment to the group and to participating in the discussions is encouraged.  BHR meets weekly, every Tuesday night, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the University City Fellowship Hall.

Kristen Thomas is the lead facilitator for BHR discussions.  She holds a Masters of Arts in Counseling, and has many years of experience in leading discussion-based, self-exploration groups.
