About Us

University City Church of Christ has offered over 127 years of worship and service to the Gainesville community!

The Bible Is Our Foundation

UCCC desires that the Bible be our guide in serving God. We have Bible classes each Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. and Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. Lessons from the Bible are taught each Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. From October through April, we also have small group Bible studies in various members’ homes. There is a class for all ages.

Individual Bible studies are available upon request.

Our History

In the late 1700s and early 1800s, individuals in Scotland and the United States independently started the Restoration Movement, aiming to strip away long-standing traditions and return to the teachings of the early church.

This movement eventually led to the founding of the University City Church of Christ in Gainesville, Florida, in 1897. Initially, members met in homes until a meeting house was built in 1907 on East University Avenue.

As the congregation grew, they moved in 1955 to a new location, also on East University Avenue.

In the early 1980s, the congregation moved into a new building at its current location. A Centennial Celebration was held in November 1997, marking 100 years of worship and service to the Gainesville community.

Our Family Believes

We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is the mystery of the Holy Trinity, where each person is fully God, coequal and coeternal. Matthew 28:19; John 14:16-17, 26; 2 Corinthians 13:14

We believe in God the Father Almighty, the Creator of all things visible and invisible. He is the source of all creation, and His sovereign will governs the universe. Genesis 1:1; Isaiah 45:18; Colossians 1:16-17

We believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the eternal Word, and the one and only Savior. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, fully human and fully divine. He lived a sinless life, suffered, and was crucified as atonement for our sins. On the third day, He rose bodily from the dead, ascended into Heaven, and will return in victory to rule forever. John 1:1-14; Matthew 1:18-25; Romans 5:8; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; Revelation 19:11-16

We believe in the Holy Spirit, who convicts the world of sin. The Holy Spirit indwells every believer, helps us in our weakness, intercedes for us in prayer, and empowers us to live fruitful Christian lives. John 16:7-15; Romans 8:26-27; 1 Corinthians 3:16; Acts 1:8

  • We believe that mankind, created by God, willfully sinned and is therefore lost and without hope apart from Jesus Christ. Salvation, the forgiveness of sins, is only by grace through the blood of Jesus Christ. One receives salvation by placing faith in Christ, repenting of sin, confessing Christ as Lord, and being baptized by immersion. Romans 3:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; Acts 2:38; Romans 10:9-10; Mark 16:16
  • We believe that those who have received salvation through faith in Jesus Christ are called to proclaim the Gospel and to love and serve others, just as Jesus Himself did. Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16; John 13:34-35
  • We believe that the Bible is God’s inspired Word, the final authority for all matters of faith, truth, morality, and Christian living. The original writings of Scripture were without error.
    2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Psalm 119:105
  • We believe that the Bible teaches that God is the Creator and Sustainer of human life, that each person is created in His image, and that life is sacred from conception to natural death. God created each person as male or female, and these distinct, complementary genders together reflect His image. Each person’s biological gender is an intrinsic and immutable part of their nature and identity.
    Genesis 1:26-27; Psalm 139:13-16; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
  • We believe the Bible teaches that God established marriage in the beginning as a lifelong, exclusive relationship between one man and one woman. Sexual intimacy is reserved as an expression of love and commitment within marriage. Any expression of sexuality outside of Biblical marriage is sin.
    Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:4-6; Hebrews 13:4
  • We believe in the Church of Jesus Christ, founded on the Day of Pentecost following Jesus’ resurrection and ascension to be with God, and consisting of all Christians everywhere, organized into local assemblies known as churches. Acts 2:42-47; Ephesians 5:23-32
  • We believe that every Christian is called to be an active member of a local church. The Elders, as overseers and shepherds of the church, have the responsibility of teaching, guiding, and caring for its members. They are the final interpretive authority of Scripture’s meaning and application for the church.1 Peter 5:1-4; Hebrews 13:17; Acts 20:28
  • We believe the Bible instructs church members to:
    • Meet regularly for fellowship, worship, teaching, and the Lord’s Supper.
    • Serve one another using both natural abilities and spiritual gifts.
    • Love, bear with, forgive, and accept one another in unity.
    • Seek peace, unity, and agreement within the body of Christ.
    • Pray for one another, bear each other’s burdens, and spur one another to love and good deeds.
    • Submit to the authority of the elders and support the church financially.
    • Pursue personal holiness and strive to obey God’s Word.
    • Join in the mission of fulfilling the Great Commission.
  • Hebrews 10:24-25; Galatians 6:2; Ephesians 4:11-16; Matthew 28:19-20
